Chimney Cap Installation in San Jose and the South Bay

A chimney cap is a metal cover installed on top of the flue that keeps out rain, animals, and debris while allowing smoke to vent freely, and installation typically takes 30 to 60 minutes once you are on-site with the right size cap. A chimney without a cap is one of the most common causes of both water damage and unwanted wildlife inside a flue.

Signs You Need a Cap

The cap is the cheapest part of your chimney and does the most protective work. Here is when it needs attention.

  • No visible cap on top of the chimney at all
  • Animal noises, scratching or chirping, coming from the flue
  • Rust streaks inside the firebox or on the damper, a sign water is entering from above
  • A rusted, dented, or ill-fitting existing cap
  • Downdrafts or smoke smell that worsen on windy days
Simple From Start to Finish

Our Process

01

Measure

Measure the flue opening precisely, round or square, since an off-the-shelf cap that does not fit will not seal against wind-driven rain.

02

Recommend

Recommend the right cap type: single-flue, multi-flue, or a full chase cover for prefabricated chimneys.

03

Install & Seal

Install and seal the cap, then check for a secure fit and proper draft with no smoke intrusion.

04

Photo Confirmation

Photo confirmation of the completed installation so you can see the work without climbing a ladder.

Good Questions

Chimney Cap FAQ

Do all chimneys need a cap?

Yes. Building codes in most Bay Area cities require a spark arrestor cap, and even where it is not strictly required, an uncapped flue is a near-guaranteed entry point for water and animals.

A cap covers an individual flue opening. A chase cover is the metal or copper panel that seals the entire top of a prefabricated, metal-box chimney enclosure.

A properly sized cap should not restrict draft. Smoke or downdraft issues usually mean the cap is too small, damaged, or the flue has an unrelated draft problem.

A quality stainless steel or copper cap typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more with no maintenance beyond periodic cleaning.
